KMA Strengthens Partnership with ASEAN Members

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has held final report meetings on two projects that have been successfully completed. One project is Installation of Automated Weather Observation System for Forecasting and Warning of Natural Disasters in Mongolia, which was implemented from 2017 to 2019 at a cost of 2.82 million dollars, and the other is Modernization of Forecasting and Warning System for Natural Disasters in Myanmar, from 2017 to 2019 at a cost of 3.86 million dollars.

Both projects focused on installing AWSs, building data collection and monitoring system, and strengthening staff’s capacity building in Mongolia and Myanmar, respectively. The final report meetings and hand over ceremonies of the projects were held at the Mongolian National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring (NAMEM) on October 21 and at Kempinski Hotel Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar on December 11, respectively. The projects, meetings and ceremonies have provided the KMA with an opportunity to help strengthen capabilities for disaster response in Mongolia and Myanmar and to further solidify cooperative partnership with the two countries.

In addition, the KMA has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) of Cambodia on December 9 to undertake a project Modernization of Forecasting and Warning System for Natural Disasters in Cambodia at a cost of 2.92 million dollars from 2019 to 2022.

“The KMA plans to expand ODA projects in the field of meteorology to ASEAN countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Lao PDR. Next year we are going to launch a project for building GEO-KOMPSAT-2A Satellite data reception and analysis system both in Cambodia and Bangladesh,” Administrator KIM Jongseok said. “Through these projects, we hope to greatly contribute to the improvement of meteorological technologies in Southeast Asian countries.”
